Sails designed for light sailing

Light sailing has its own specific constraints.

The boats are lightweight, sail areas are relatively large compared with the boat's weight, and the equipment is often subjected to considerable stress.

A sail intended for a training dinghy must be able to withstand repeated and intensive use. A sport catamaran sail must retain good shape and withstand considerable loads. A sail intended for racing must prioritize shape stability and performance.

That is why the choice of fabric, weight, cut and reinforcements is tailored to each type of sail.

Dacron, Mylar, Nylon: materials suited to every use

Dacron is widely used for mainsails and jibs on dinghies and catamarans.

It offers an excellent balance of strength, stability, ease of maintenance and price. Different fabric weights can be used depending on the boat model and its intended use.

For jibs and mainsails, Mylar is a performance-oriented alternative. Lighter, but also more fragile over time, it will suit demanding sailors.

For spinnakers, Nylon keeps the sail light and easy to handle. Thommeret Voiles uses, in particular, fabrics such as 0.75 Oz and 0.9 Oz on various models.

The construction can also be adapted to the sail's requirements, with cross-cut or tri-radial cuts, depending on the model.

Reinforcements, tell-tales, battens, reefing bands, bolt ropes, slides, windows, and various attachment systems must be adapted to the boat and how it is used.

The reinforcements at the tack, clew, and head are particularly important on boats used intensively.

Tell-tales help improve sail trim by making airflow visible.

These features may seem secondary, but they directly contribute to the sail's ease of use and service life.

Particularly useful expertise for older boats

Many dinghies and catamarans continue to sail for several decades after they were built.

This is particularly true of many 420, 470, Hobie Cat, Dart, Laser® or Topaz boats.

For these boats, replacing the sails often gives them a genuine new lease on life.

However, an older boat warrants a few checks before receiving a new sail.

Over the years, the boat may have been repaired, modified, or fitted with parts from another version. It is therefore important to check the sail's attachment system: the bolt rope or slides. You will also need to specify which features of the old sail should be retained: a leech line to be added, a clam cleat to be installed, etc.

Finally, the old sail is not always a perfect reference: after several years, it may have become misshapen or stretched.

If in doubt, a few photos of the boat, rigging, and old sail will often make it possible to check compatibility before ordering.

Thommeret Voiles sails are made to order. They are therefore not stocked like standard deck hardware products.

You should currently allow for approximately 8 weeks for delivery, depending on the model, time of year and any customizations.

This lead time should be taken into account especially by clubs, sailing schools and professionals preparing for the season.

We therefore recommend ordering in advance, particularly before spring and the start of the sailing season.
